Typography Apprenticeships Starting Autumn 2025
We're launching practical web typography training for people who want to build real technical skills. Not another bootcamp promising overnight success.
Our programmes run for six to twelve months, blending hands-on work with mentorship from experienced developers. You'll learn how type actually behaves on screens — kerning, responsive scaling, fallback stacks, and performance optimisation.
Most participants join with basic HTML knowledge and leave capable of handling complex typographic systems for commercial projects.
Foundation Track
Six months of evening sessions covering core concepts. You'll study typeface anatomy, web font formats, and CSS text properties through structured exercises.
This track suits people currently working who want to add typography skills without leaving their jobs.
- Two evening sessions weekly (7pm–9pm)
- Self-paced projects with fortnightly reviews
- Access to our type library and testing tools
- Portfolio development guidance
Intensive Studio Programme
Full-time immersive training over twelve weeks. You'll work on client briefs alongside our commercial team, learning through actual deadlines and real feedback.
This accelerated path requires full commitment but gets you production-ready faster.
- Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm schedule
- Live project work with paying clients
- Daily code reviews and pair programming
- Direct mentorship from lead developers
Advanced Specialisation
For developers who already work with type but want deeper expertise. We focus on variable fonts, internationalisation, accessibility standards, and performance at scale.
Three months of project-based learning with industry practitioners.
- Flexible scheduling around your work
- Complex problem-solving workshops
- Contributing to open-source type projects
- Guest sessions with foundry representatives
Corporate Training Solutions
Custom programmes for design teams needing consistent typographic standards across products. We audit your current implementation and build training around your actual codebase.
Delivered on-site or remotely, structured to fit your team's availability.
- Initial technical audit and assessment
- Customised curriculum based on findings
- Ongoing support for six months post-training
- Documentation and style guide creation
How Learning Progresses
Every programme follows a similar arc, though timelines vary. Here's roughly how skills develop regardless of which track you choose.
Technical Foundations
Understanding how browsers render type, font file formats, and CSS text properties. Lots of reading specifications and experimenting with basic implementations.
Practical Application
Building responsive type systems that actually work across devices. This phase involves breaking things repeatedly until you understand why certain approaches fail.
Advanced Techniques
Variable fonts, OpenType features, performance optimisation. The nuanced stuff that separates adequate implementation from genuinely sophisticated work.
Professional Practice
Working with real constraints — legacy browser support, content management systems, team workflows. Learning how to advocate for good typography within business realities.
Programme Investment
Pricing reflects the time commitment required and level of individual attention provided. Payment plans available for all programmes.

Who Teaches These Programmes
Our instructors work as professional developers and bring current industry experience to every session. They're here because they genuinely enjoy teaching, not as a side gig between contracts.
Siobhan Ó Riagáin
Spent eight years building typographic systems for publishing platforms. Now splits time between client work and teaching developers how type actually functions in production environments.
Elif Bakker
Works primarily on internationalisation challenges for global platforms. Teaches the complexities of non-Latin scripts and performance optimisation for large-scale implementations.
Applications Open May 2025
We're accepting applications for autumn intake starting September 2025. Foundation and Advanced tracks begin 15 September. Intensive Studio programme starts 22 September.
Application process includes a technical assessment and interview. We're looking for people genuinely interested in typography rather than those chasing any available tech job. Portfolio not required, but helpful if you have relevant work.
